I've been teaching fiction in Marin, San Francisco, and Sonoma
Counties since 1990. I am a frequent judge for literary
contests, a host for literary readings, and I’ve published
a literary magazine, Bust
Out, for several
years, as well
as six books for local writers, including Gina Berriault.
My chapbook House Samurai: Stories and Poems is available
through Iota
Press.
Like writing, teaching is a process of discovery. One of the
things I’ve discovered is that teaching is an art. I pride
myself on guiding and inspiring my students, who range in age
from 18 to 94, to write their stories and hone their craft. While
getting published is never our only goal in class, I nonetheless
truly enjoy it when my students receive acceptance letters. I’m
a writer. As Vita Sackville-West suggested, “It is necessary
to write, if the days are not to slip emptily by.” But I
am primarily a teacher who takes great joy in serving as a catalyst
for creativity.
